Club Program

Community 4-H clubs are organized with at least two adult volunteers and three or more youth members. In Sacramento County, there are 19 community 4-H clubs ranging in size from five members with two volunteers to 150 members with 60 volunteers. In 4-H, members are encouraged to set their own goals and make their own plans and decisions. Kids learn to:

  • conduct their own business meetings
  • provide leadership for younger members
  • get involved in community service activities

They also participate in projects to develop knowledge and skills around a specific subject matter. Volunteers are integral to the success of the 4-H program. Volunteers coach the members in activities and projects, guiding them as they mature, build self-confidence, and acquire leadership skills. Please also see the 4-H Frequently Asked Questions page.

The oldest and most established of our delivery methods, 4-H Community Clubs are found throughout the county and offer the opportunity for hands-on learning for children ages 5 to 19. 4-H Clubs meet monthly and are youth planned and led.

Within each club, 4-H members can choose to participate in a variety of projects, each designed to promote growth in a fun, positive learning environment. Over 1,000 children participate in 19 4-H Community Clubs in Sacramento County.

In 4-H there is truly something for everyone!

Adult volunteers lead all 4-H Clubs and projects. They provide expertise in project areas, assume countywide 4-H leadership positions, and oversee the generation

and allocation of financial resources for the local program. Most importantly, they form important ties with young people and provide adult friendship and support.

What are projects?

The project is where learning-by-doing takes place, as kids find things to learn, to do, to make, and to explore. Each year 4-H members enroll in at least one project lasting from eight weeks to year-round, depending on how the leader structures the project or how involved a member becomes. Project record book forms are available to 4-H members free of charge, but there may be additional costs to participate in some projects (this is definitely the case for most animal science projects).

The California 4-H program offers a wide variety of projects -- so there's something fun for everyone! Several of the projects listed will be offered at a club near you, but it really depends upon whether an adult volunteer is available to lead them.
