Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are crucial to the wide variety of 4-H programs. We are completely dependent upon you to help us provide our varied services. When you volunteer with 4-H you can have the type and amount of volunteer experience that works for you and your schedule, and you'll be certain that you are helping us to keep program prices down and club programs up and running. Below is a list of just some of the volunteer opportunities that are in store for you:

The Club Program:

CF BBQ 11

The Club Program is the oldest and most established of our delivery methods, 4-H Community Clubs are found throughout the county and offer the opportunity for hands-on learning for children ages 5 to 19. 4-H Clubs meet monthly and are youth planned and led. Within each club, 4-H members can choose to participate in a variety of projects, each designed to promote growth in a fun, positive learning environment. Over 1,000 children participate in 19 4-H Community Clubs in Sacramento County. We rely upon volunteers to staff our Sacramento 4-H Council, to Lead the Club Programs and Projects. There are lots of fun perks of being a leader, including trainings and conferences.

The Youth Experiences in Science (YES) Program.

YES 001
The 4-H YES curriculum is designed to foster inquiry and engage children ages 5 to 8 in the process of exploration. Young children are introduced to the formal scientific process by performing a variety of scientific tasks including observing, organizing, comparing, and communicating. A cross-age teaching model engages teenage volunteers as teachers. After attending a 10-hour training session (and equipped with the YES curriculum and adult support), the teens work in teams to prepare and deliver the weekly science activities. We have volunteer openings for both teens and adults. Please see the full job descriptions listed below:

On The Wild Side Program.

OTWS pictures 015
The purpose of On the Wild Side is to bring environmental education and an outdoor living experience to fourth, fifth, and sixth grade children who have limited opportunity to explore wild places or sleep under the stars. Teens attend a day-long training session, then work in teams to plan and deliver program components. High school students seeking a meaningful way to connect with and serve are invited to apply for a staff position. Adult volunteers serve as "coaches" who support the teens in their leadership development and growth.

Leaders' Council and the Sacramento 4-H Executive Board.

Leader
The Leaders' Council meets here at the office the 4th Tuesday of the month (with a few exceptions, please call to confirm). Everyone involved in 4-H is invited to attend. The Leaders' Council is the place to bring your ideas and iron out any problems. At 6:30 p.m. you are invited to join the "host" for light refreshments and chatting. the meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. sharp. The "host" is a predesignated club or program that will also provide a short presentation.

The Executive Board meets here at the office at 7:00 p.m. on the third Monday of the month. There is currently an on Vice President position and we are actively recruiting more youth participation.
