The University of California Cooperative Extension Sacramento County recognizes and seeks the unlimited resources and skills of our community members. Our vision clearly identifies volunteers as an integral part of our dynamic group working together to enhance the quality of life and economic capacity in all communities.
Interested community members may apply to become a University of California Cooperative Extension Volunteer by completing the on-line Volunteer Opportunity form or call (916) 875-6913. All volunteers are required to be fingerprinted and participate in a general orientation. Volunteers may serve in one or more of the following areas:
OFFICE
- Office & Secretarial duties including answering phones.
- Back-up telephone coverage for meetings, training, etc.
- Printing some of the handouts for the public and other printing or copying projects.
- Stamping 34 on catalogs and envelopes.
- Type (typewriter) addresses for mail outs.
- Priced publication inventory (Once a year).
- Stuff envelopes.
- Tidy up the publication room, straighten files.
- Run newsletter & publications.
- Restock plant clinic boxes.
- Update Pest Note Binders.
- Stuff other newsletters.
- Set up & run satellite as it is requested.
- Put paper away.
- Straighten & label workroom cupboards.
- Clean workroom.
- Prepare bulk mailing of quarterly newsletters: Consumer Trends, Maternal & Infant Nutrition Briefs, & Life Skills.
- Replenish depleted recipe files for Master Food Preservers, Expanded Food & Nutrition, & Food Stamp Nutrition programs.
- Make copies of missing recipes.
- Input data for special projects.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
- Media relations - help us tell our story.
RESEARCH
- Conduct literature review searches for various projects.
- Develop & maintain Q & A resource files on consumer inquires related to stain removal.
- Be available to answer phone calls about stain removal.
- Conduct phone survey.
- Input data for special projects.
EDUCATION
- Develop & maintain a quarterly newsletter for nutrition clients & community partners.
- Teach nutrition to adults & children (this project is reserved for volunteers that have appropriate experience in this area).
- Prepare displays & posters for community wide events such as health fairs.
- Conduct focus groups.
- Assist with community presentations.
- 4-H Youth Development auditors & bookkeepers - review club books; financial systems.
- 4-H Youth Development resource leader - support adult project leaders in a specific topic area (food preparation, rabbits, etc.)
- 4-H Youth Development event committees - help organize various countywide events, including Country Fair & BBQ.
- 4-H Youth Development program expansion - develop 4-H programming for new audiences.
- 4-H Youth Development program evaluation - participate in the design & implementation of 4-H program evaluations.
- Assistant 4-H Youth Development club leader - assist a community club leader in your neighborhood.
- 4-H Youth Development project leaders - share your interests & talents with children.
- 4-H Youth Development camp committees - develop resident camp or day camp programs with youth.
- Science Coaches - work with a team of teenagers to deliver hands-on science program to younger children.
OUTDOOR
- Staff booths & distribute nutrition education materials at various community health fairs.
- Assist at the Fair Oaks Horticulture Center when we plant.
- 4-H Youth Development Camp Cook - one week during the summer.
- 4-H Youth Development Camp Nurse - one week during the summer.
